Arc Storage System for Tesla Model X Design Concept
Process: Rhinoceros 3D, Keyshot Rendering, Illustrator, Photoshop
As a utility vehicle, the Model X has a generous amount of space in its multiple compartments, but do not have room to hold both passengers and oblong luggage. The introduction of the “falcon wing” doors on the Tesla Model X resolves door swing issues in tight spaces as well as head room while entering and exiting the vehicle, but does not allow for a conventional roof rack to be installed due to clearance issues on the roof.
Arc is two-part system composed of a “Y” shaped rack rail and the arc-shaped roof box. The rack is fixed to the contour of the roof and does not interfere with the falcon wing doors while open. When the passenger begins to open the door, the roof box slides forward along the rail towards the bonnet. As a safety feature, the car will be put into “Park” to prevent the car from moving while the box is in the view of the driver. When accessing the luggage, the sides of the box will push out to a reachable distance while standing next to the bonnet. A solar panel and Li-ion battery power the roof box and acts as an auxiliary power reserve.
