Housing Prototype, New Haven Design Studio: James Vlock Building Project - Yale School of Architecture
The brief for the Vlock Building Project called for a narrow non-conforming single-family house in New Haven, Connecticut. As a perverse yet opportune response to the long and narrow lot, this housing prototype is cut longitudinally with a diagonal, allowing for a sequence of activities from a tight, compressive corridor to an open, spacious room on each side of the split. Consequently, this sandwiched diagonal becomes a universal “wall” in which equipment (cabinets, plumbing, light wells) and program (bathroom and kitchen) are injected into.
